Kourtney Kardashian has bravely opened up about the harrowing ordeal she recently faced during her pregnancy. In an emotional Instagram post, the reality star revealed she was rushed into urgent fetal surgery in order to save her unborn baby’s life.
Sources close to Kardashian say she is still reeling from the terrifying events that unfolded last week. Up until that point, the 43-year-old’s pregnancy had been smooth sailing. But a sudden, life-threatening complication meant she needed emergency surgery to protect her baby.
“I don’t think anyone who hasn’t been through a similar situation can begin to understand that feeling of fear,” Kourtney wrote online. The surgery came as a huge shock, since her previous three pregnancies had been “really easy.”
Kourtney praised her “incredible doctors” for their role in saving her child’s life. But she reserved her biggest thanks for husband Travis Barker, who dashed to her side despite being mid-tour with his band Blink-182.
“I am eternally grateful to my husband who rushed to my side from tour to be with me in the hospital and take care of me afterwards, my rock,” gushed Kourtney.
Barker postponed several Blink-182 shows at the last minute, telling fans he had to attend to an unspecified “family emergency.” Now it seems the emergency was his wife requiring sudden fetal surgery to protect their unborn son.
He later posted a tweet, giving updates on the situation and announcing the tour resumption date.
While Kourtney has not revealed the exact complication she faced, experts say reasons for urgent fetal surgery can include:
- Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome – a condition in which twins share unequal amounts of the placenta’s blood supply.
- Placental abruption – when the placenta detaches from the womb early.
- Congenital diaphragmatic hernia – when the baby’s stomach and intestines push into the chest cavity.
- Urinary tract obstruction – blockages that prevent the baby’s kidneys from developing properly.
Whatever the cause, it’s clear she and her baby endured a harrowing brush with tragedy before being saved by medical intervention.
Kourtney says the experience has left her with “a whole new understanding and respect” for mothers who’ve had to protect their babies prenatally.
